What silent film would you like to see?: Any being preserved! | Comments: I feel like the last of the Mohicans. I'm the only silent film accompanist in the Salt Lake City area. At The Organ Loft, I'm playing our 13th annual series (Sept thru May) which features 19 to 23 showings. We have an enthusiastic following, especially lo ers of annual showing of Chaney's Phantom...a happily awaited tradition now 9 years old. We are starting a school for film accompanists which makes silent film enthusiasts of musicians, and vice-versa. We want to offer enough formal education on the sile t film art, and the almost lost live accompaniment art form, that new students will thrive on the unknowable experience of performing on the Loft's 5-manual 36-rank WurliTzer before a live audience. We have a 2manual-11rank WurliTzer in our downtown Capi ol Theater kept in top shape, and in Ogden, Utah's Egyptian Theater I'll inaugurate their newly installed theater pipe organ next September, 2000, with Chaney's Phantom of the Opera. They start their annual silent movie series then. You can see why we wa t more musicians to play live accompaniment the way the film's director would want it done. My next feature is The Goldrush, and I must use Charley's 1942 version music on the original version. This almost lost art seem to be lost from the web pages I am isiting originating in California and Atlanta...all across the country, there is need to recognize and restore this almost lost art. Anything you can do to boost our effort would be greatly appreciated. We are going to connect it to the University of Ut h's Continuing Education program. I played The Last Laugh and The Crowd for the U.ofU.'s Film Department class last month, using a digital keyboard the sounded like the pit orchestras of the past. We are determined to do our part to keep the masterpiece of the silent era from disappearing from our fine arts culture...including the music that gives it voice. I am Blaine Gale, 11439 High Mesa Drive, Sandy, UT 84092 (801)571-9261. Please help us. |

It was located on a bluff above the Columbia River, about 15 miles from Portland, Oregon. Great food and a view that brought folks from near and foreign countries. She died in 1930 and the Chalet was destroyed. She kept a guestbook, which I inherited 3 years ago, and I have spent much time researching the some 10,000 signatures in the books. What a trip!! The names in the book make up a "who's who" of the period. A number of silent film stars made it to the Chalet...Ronald Colman, Lew Cody, Wallace Reid, Bert Lytell, Jack Pickford, Roscoe Arbuckle, Jean Hersholt, Carol Holloway, Charlotte Greenwood, Bert Sprotte, Harold Lloyd, Fay Bainter,to name amny of the film people and not to mention those outside film, ie Henry Ford, FW Woolworth, Gertrude Ederle, Gene Tunney, Queen of Rumania, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto,Maud Powell, Fritz Kreisler, etc. Now at last I get to the Point! The following entry has been the cornerstone of my search, and what has caused the most excitement. And now the greatest angst. The date is Sunday, April 15, 1923 (April 16 is Chaplin's birthday) Douglas McLean.............Hollywood Theda Bara.................Hollywood Chas Chaplin...............Hollywood Pola Negri.................Hollywood As a silent film lover, can you see why I might get excited at this bit of chemistry? But here is my great frustration: I now conclude that the Chas Chaplin signature is not his! I have 3 views of his sig from different sources, and no match at all! And thus the other sigs in this quad are now highly suspect! This entry may be a phoney, but cunningly elaborate if it is. What I am now attempting to do is find copies of sigs of the 3 other than Chaplin...It is not uncommon for others in party to sign for others, and it might be true that Pola Negri signed for Chaplin...The style of writing is the same for Chaplin and Negri. Also the style of writing for McLean and Bara are the same (but different from Chaplin and Negri) So far in reading bios of Chaplin and Bara (haven't found a full bio for Negri and McLean) there is no mention of trip to Oregon on Chaplin's birthday although the gaps in the bios leave room for that to happen. At the time of the possible visit to the Chalet, Chaplin and Pola were "engaged" so that all fits. I have no material that suggests that McLean ever met Bara, although Hollywood was such a small town in those days. I ask for any advice that might help with the mystery..I will not rest until I determine that the potentially history making entry is a fake....or no. I have photos of the sigs and also am capable of emailing the sigs as an attachment to email. Sorry for the length of this "comment" but felt like the details were required to make the point. |

Over 350! What silent film would you like to see?: Trilby (1923) with Arthur Edmund Carewe and Andree Lafayette | Comments: This site, along with The Damfinos' web page to Buster Keaton (the best performer who has EVER lived), provides multitudes of information to us silent film lovers. I got interested in silent films when I was 13 after my sister read a biography on Greta Garbo. About a year later, I read Blesh's biography on Keaton, and the love affair has never ceased, even after 11 years, with either Keaton or silent films in general. I have ecletic tastes -- loving German silents and Keystone comedies equally well. The only problem is that I want to buy everything Grapevine Video and Kino Video have! I guess that's what profit sharing checks are for! Another one of my favorite silent performers is Arthur Edmund Carewe. He plays Garbo's operatic lover in The Torrent and, apart from Trilby, was relegated to supporting parts for his entire career. I managed to get xeroxes of his contracts at Warner Brothers from the WB Archives. Just to get the word out that they're very friendly there and are happy to help yo |

marcia cederberg - 04/29/99 00:14:08 My Email:fencerows@novanet1.com How did you find out about this site?: advanced search on the web Do you collect silent film videos?: found some rare photos see below | Comments: Hello, I have become desperate to find someone who can assist me in locating a resource, a person, or a connection to silent movie history. Maybe you are that person or you know someone who can assist. My husband has titled the following story, "Humbo t to Hollywood". Three years ago, I inherited some farmland between Arcola and Humbolt, IL. I was the only relative who kept their share of the land. The others sold out to a wealthy investor. I asked the soon-to-be owner of the remaining share of land, if I could remove hardware, doors, mouldings, etc. from th old farmhouse, since this was my great-grand parents' home (built in the 1870's). He was planning to burn the farmhouse anyway. He said, "Take the whole house." Little did I know what historic find I would unearth. In the attic, under the layers of m ny years of renters' leftovers, the following was found: 1. Photo - To my dear friend "General" Charles Roger who commands some army with a bunch of "pep" from George Walsh (Vote Day) 2. Photo - For "My Sparring Partner" Mr. Rogers Frankie Lee 1917 3. Photo - Best Wishes to my friend Mr. C. Rogers Martin Kinney 4. Photo - Sincerely, Dorothy Gish 5. Photo - Sincerely Yours, Joseph P. Swickard 1916 6. Photo - To Mr. Rogers with very good wishes from Florence Crawford Adolfi 7. Photo - To my dear friend Rogers, Sincerely, George Walsh 8. Photo - To Charles Rogers Sincerely, Jim Farley, 1917 9. Photo - My Best Wishes to Mr. Rogers Yours Always, Eleanor Crowe, 1917 10. Photo - Name on the back Dustin Farnum 11. Newspaper article "Bard to See Moving Pictures in the Making For Few Weeks" discusses Capitol Film Company, Mr. Rogers, well-known actor 12. Twenty-nine still shots of silent films- some are marked: The Miner's Baby, The Last Shot F.A. Turner, His Last Deal, Mr. Kilsey, Mr. Dark Cloud, Betsy's face was tense and white as she asked, "Did you ever see a ghost?" Haunted Bedroom. 13. Photo - an early 1900's California Home with the House Number 1511 14. The corner of the magazine "Reel Life" and I have a matching picture. I have been able to identify and obtain historic information on the photos of the silent actors and actresses. We're not quite sure if Charles Rogers was Charles "Buddy" Rogers, third husband of Mary Pickford? We believe that one of the renters of the f rmhouse was a relative named Bertha Rogers Daugherty who died in the 1960's. We took these photographs to Barbara Peckham, a reputable appraiser in Champaign, IL. She took one look at them and said she had never seen anything like these and referred us to Sotherby's. I contacted them and they forwarded my list to their New York( ollywood historian) contact person, but I have not heard from him. I would like to find out exactly which silent films were represented by the 29 still shots. Well this has been an experience, as well as a frustration to obtain information on these stil shots. The torn corner of "Reel Life" led me to the thought that if I could view the weekly issues, that similiar shots or identical pictures could help me identify what silent movies were represented by the 29 still shots. First, I found out that the eekly magazine was on microfilm at the New York Public Library. It was suggested that if a college library requested the inofrmation, the microfilm could be sent. After the local junior college librarian made contact, "No way". The librarian searched f r another alternative and found a second place in the country, the Center for Research Libraries, Chicago. The response was "No way". I then e-mailed the board of directors and was informed they are part of a closed society of libraries. Do you have an suggestions? 80-90% of the silent films have been lost forever. I'm grasping for leads. Any help would be appreciated. Do you know anything about the Margaret Herrick Library in Beverly Hills, CA? Is this a private library? They seem to have some k nd of storehouse of a multitude of movie items. Any suggestions? The information is so limited, bits and pieces all over. Thank you, Marcia Cederberg fencerows@novanet1.com |

Bill Felknor - 12/28/98 21:02:45 My Email:bfelknor@icx.net | Comments: I am a collector of movie posters, having a special interest in silents. I recently bought a half sheet called "Out of the Dust", directed by John P. McCarthyk, and (I think) starring William S. Hart. The half sheet is hand tinted and the movie was made in 1920. (I have a 1926 Film Yearbook that lists 7,000 silent titles. Bought it in a dusty old bookstore in L.A. and have used it constantly to find old silent titles). My question, if anyone can answer it, is whether or not William S. Hart starred in "Out of the Dust". I am 99% sure the man in the half sheet is Hart (square jaw, dimples, long thin nose, etc.) but can't find anything to verify. If you can help me, pls mail me. I thank you sincerely. Also, I value my privacy and ask you not to share my email address with anybody else. Best Personal Regards, Bill Felknor bfelknor@icx.net PS: If you ever need anything looked up in my year book, email me and I would be delighted to help. |

Do you collect silent film videos?: I collect more books about the era than videos (rent the videos whenever possible, and owe Gilda many, many thanks for so graciously sharing her fabulous collection of videos with me). Cinecon is another great w y to see silent movies. What silent film would you like to see?: Monta Bell's "Man, Woman & Sin" starring Jeanne Eagels. | Comments: Dear Gilda, These questions are so difficult to answer, because it's so hard to narrow the choices down to only one. I guess I had to say "The Sheik" and "Valentino" because that was my first silent movie: the first cut is the deepest. But then there's lso Garbo, and there's Gilbert, Lillian Gish, Buster Keaton, Louise Brooks, Charlie Chaplin, Clara Bow, Gloria Swanson, Richard Barthelmess, Pola Negri, Marion Davies, Anna May Wong, Betty Bronson, Laura La Plante, Betty Compson... As for favorite movies how can you choose? I'll never forget seeing "little" movies like Lois Weber's "The Blot," or Richard Barthelmess in "The Patent Leather Kid." How about "The Chessplayer" or "Pandora's Box?" Gance's "Napoleon?" What is more fun than "The Italian Stra Hat?" Then there's Mary Pickford in "Stella Maris," and there's "Underworld," there's "Skinner's Dress Suit"...OK, I'll shut up! |

What she has achieved in only six months is really very astonishing and admirefull. I think her knowledge in building homepages is far better than most of the common webmasters. I appreciate her work even more because she is "fighting" to keep romanticism alive which is already very difficult in such a grey era in which we are living where "colors" tend to fade away... Dear Gilda, just keep on going on your way ! With my utmost admiration, wishing you lots of success always, Michael |
